DALLAS (FWAA) – The unbeaten Miami Hurricanes remained the
unanimous choice for No. 1 in the FWAA/Grantland Rice Super 16 Poll. The 'Canes, winners
of the 2001 Grantland Rice Trophy, once again earned all 16 first-place votes from the
national panel after earning their 27th straight win, 48-14, over soon-to-be Big East
foe Connecticut.
Virginia Tech, No. 4 in last week's poll, vaulted to the No. 2 spot, ahead of Texas
and Oklahoma, after both the Longhorns and Sooners struggled to win tough conference
games. The Hokies made the jump after enjoying a week off in preparation for Boston
College. Texas survived a scare from Oklahoma State, 17-15, and OU used a fake field
goal to edge Missouri, 31-24, on the road.
Washington State (12) and Michigan (14) both returned to the poll after a one-week
absence and Penn State made its Super 16 debut at No. 15. Kansas State, Washington and
USC dropped out. Florida dropped to No. 16 after its 17-14 loss to Ole Miss.
The FWAA/Grantland Rice Super 16 Poll, which has made its debut this season, will decide the
winner of the Grantland Rice Trophy, the FWAA's national championship award presented since 1954.
The presentation will be made on Sat., Jan. 4 in Tempe, Ariz., following the Tostitos Fiesta
Bowl.

Ole Miss, which had a hand in dropping Florida from No. 8 in the poll, is the FWAA national "Team of the
Week" after its upset of the Gators. The Rebels picked off Rex Grossman four times in rallying from a 14-2
halftime deficit to move to 4-1, 2-0 in the SEC.
The honor is also decided by the 16-member panel that votes in the organization's Grantland Rice Super 16 Poll.
Other teams drawing consideration this week included Georgia, which came back to beat Alabama, 27-25, in
Tuscaloosa; and Baylor, which ended its 29-game conference losing streak with a last-minute 35-32 win over
Kansas in Waco.
The FWAA "Team of the Week" will continue to be announced each Monday with the Super 16 Poll throughout the
season.
The FWAA, in conjunction with the Charlotte Touchdown Club, also awards a Bronko Nagurski National Defensive
Player of the Week award each week.
