Buckeyes win fourth FWAA national title
OHIO STATE WINS 2002
GRANTLAND RICE TROPHY

PHOENIX, Ariz. (FWAA) – By virtue of its 31-24 overtime win over Miami in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, Ohio State (14-0) has been voted the winner of the 2002 Grantland Rice Trophy by the Football Writers Association of America. The undefeated Buckeyes won half of their games by seven or fewer points.

The Grantland Rice Trophy has been awarded to college football's national champion since the 1954 season and Ohio State has now won it for a fourth time. The Buckeyes won the trophy three times between 1957 and 1968.

For the first time in the trophy's 48-year history, the winner of the FWAA's national championship has been determined by a season-long poll. The Grantland Rice Super 16 Poll made its debut this season with 16 FWAA members as voters who ranked the nation's top 16 teams. Ohio State was ranked No. 12 in the preseason poll, but zoomed up to No. 2 in the Nov. 11 poll. The Buckeyes maintained that spot behind Miami for the remainder of the regular season before upsetting the Hurricanes.

Miami finished No. 2 in the final poll after winning its fourth Grantland Rice Trophy a season ago. The complete final Super 16 rankings are listed below.
