DALLAS (NCBWA) – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association
continues its tradition of NCAA Division I polls for the ninth year with
its 2006 preseason predictions and weekly surveys. Weekly polls will continue
through June 27, following the NCAA World Series in Omaha, Neb.
A perfect 4-0 week, including a three-game sweep of LSU, has vaulted
South Carolina to the top spot in the NCBWA poll. The Gamecocks (26-3)
are the sixth different team to be ranked No. 1 this season by the baseball
writers. North Carolina also moved up four spots to No. 2 after taking two
of three games from Florida State, last week's top-ranked club. The Seminoles
fell to No. 4.
The SEC, with nine teams in the poll, has the most ranked teams of any
conference. Overall, this week's poll has representation by 11 different
conferences among the 284 baseball-playing schools in the NCAA Division
I ranks.
