DALLAS (NCBWA) – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending Feb. 25. Auburn sophomore outfielder Mike Bianucci was named National Hitter of the Week, while San Diego sophomore left-hander Brian Matusz was named National Pitcher of the Week.

At the tournament, he hit .667 (8-for-12) with a double, triple and six runs scored to go along with his two homers and seven RBI for a 1.417 slugging percentage. In Sunday's tournament championship-clinching win over host South Alabama, he was a double shy of the cycle, driving in four runs.

Matusz, a native of Cave Creek, Ariz., was once again dominant on the mound for the Toreros in Friday's 2-0 series opening win over Wake Forest. He threw a one-hit shutout in seven innings of work, walking two. He also posted 10 strikeouts to move his season total up to 54, the nation's best according to BoydsWorld.com. Matusz has posted three consecutive games of double-digit strikeouts and in his five outings the season, he has posted four double-digit strikeouts.

With this week's honor, Matusz automatically is named to the watch list for Roger Clemens Award, given to the national collegiate pitcher of the year, sponsored by the Greater Houston Baseball Organization.
