Arizona State's Bishop, Louisville's Detmers honored

NCBWA NAMES DIVISION I
NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE MONTH

DALLAS (NCBWA) – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association has named Arizona State outfielder Hunter Bishop its National Player of the Month and Louisville starting pitcher Reid Detmers its National Pitcher of the Month for March, it was announced on Friday.

Bishop, a native of Palo Alto, Calif., slugged 14 homers during an 18-game month in March, batting .443 (31-for-70) with 30 runs, five doubles, two triples and 33 RBI. He drew 19 walks and struck out 15 times, sporting seven steals and a 1.74 OPS. A 6-foot-5, 210-pound junior, he was named Pac-12 Player of the Week three times in four weeks over March. On the year, Bishop leads the nation in homers (16), while hitting .417 (43-for-103) with nine doubles, two triples, 41 RBI and 10 steals, totaling a 1.562 OPS. He also leads the nation in RBI, total bases (104) and slugging percentage (1.010), while pacing the Pac-12 in average (.417).

A native of Chatham, Ill., Detmers posted a 4-1 record with a 0.98 ERA over his five starts in March, tossing 36.2 innings, allowing 20 hits and just four runs, walking only four and fanning 62. Opponents hit .155 off Detmers in March. During his sophomore season, Detmers has posted a 5-1 record and a 0.92 ERA in his first seven starts. He has worked 48.2 innings - allowing just 245 hits, five runs and eight walks, - striking out 76 and holding foes to a .143 average. As a freshman in 2018, Detmers went 4-2 in 18 games and eight starts, walking 34 and striking out 69 in 55.2 innings.

This marks the fourth consecutive year that the NCBWA has honored a player and pitcher of the month. Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball.
