NCBWA NAMES DIVISION III NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

DALLAS (NCBWA) – The no-hitters keep coming in NCAA Div. III, this time with a pitcher in the City University of New York Athletic Conference firing one. A four-home run week and a 10-for-18 showing rounded out this week’s National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Div. III honors. The sixth selections in 2022 were chosen based on games March 28-April 3.

HITTER OF THE WEEK
Eastern Connecticut State University senior third baseman Luke Broadhurst was named Little East Conference Player of the Week after batting .700 (7-for-10) and slugging 1.900 in a 3-0 week for the third-ranked Warriors. Broadhurst had four homers, 10 RBI, and eight runs scored over the week. He opened the week going 3-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and three runs scored in a 13-1 non-conference win over Wheaton College (Massachusetts). The senior then went a combined 4-for-6 with three dingers, three walks, seven RBI, and five runs scored as Eastern Connecticut State notched 11-5 and 14-1 conference victories over Plymouth State University (New Hampshire) on Saturday.

Honorable Mention Hitter: Jacob Charon Sr., OF, Lawrence University (Wisconsin) – Midwest Conference Position Performer of the Week after smacking four homers in Lawrence’s doubleheader sweep of Grinnell College (Iowa) on Saturday. Went 6-for-10 with nine RBI and six runs scored in the three-game series with the Pioneers. In the opener, he went 2-for-3, drove in four runs, and scored three times. Charon hit a two-run homer in the fifth and followed that with a two-run homer in the sixth, as the Vikings won 11-0. In the second game, Charon went 4-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored in a 14-10 victory. He hit a three-run homer in the first inning and blasted a two-run homer in the ninth. Charon now has nine home runs on the season and that ties the Lawrence season record just 13 games into the campaign.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK
John Jay College's (New York) sophomore Ismael Tatis fired last week’s no-hitter in NCAA Div. III. The CUNY Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week went seven innings, did not allow a run, and struck out four to lower his season ERA to 3.60. Tatis and the Bloodhounds beat University of Valley Forge (Pennsylvania) 11-0. Tatis needed just 86 pitches and he faced two over the minimum in the no-no.

Honorable Mention Pitcher: Danny Thompson, So., North Carolina Wesleyan College – USA South Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week after setting a modern-day program record with 17 strikeouts in a complete-game, 11-inning, 5-3 victory over USA South foe Averett University (Virginia). Thompson allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits while throwing 140 pitches.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Westfield State University (Massachusetts) outfielder Samuel Palmer batted .556 (10-for-18) with two doubles, a triple, home run, seven RBI, five runs scored, a stolen base, and a .944 slugging percentage in a 3-1 week for the Owls. The Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Player and Rookie of the Week belted a home run and a double in a 6-5 setback against Coast Guard Academy (Connecticut). He went 6-for-9 with a double, triple, five RBI, and two runs scored in the doubleheader sweep of Fitchburg State University (Massachusetts) on Saturday. That followed up a hit and run scored in a 4-2 win over Fitchburg State on Friday.
