MORGANTOWN, W. VA. (NCBWA) – The National Collegiate
Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released its
Dick Howser Trophy National Player of the Week awards presented
by The Game Headwear for the period ending May 1. Charlotte's
sophomore infielder David McCabe and Rutgers sophomore
outfielder Ryan Lasko were named National
Co-Hitters of the Week, while Maryland junior left-hander
Ryan Ramsey was named National Pitcher
of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each
Division I Conference and names winners each Tuesday throughout
the season.
McCabe was the only Charlotte player to hit better than .500
in the five games this past week and was the only Niner with double-digit
hits. The Oshawa, Ontario, native, finished the week hitting 12-of-22
(.545) with six home runs, 18 RBI, 12 runs, had three doubles and
six walks during the 5-0 week for the 49ers.
McCabe tied the single-game program record with three home runs
on Saturday in the win over Marshall. He homered in four of the
five games on the week, and slugged 1.500. Charlotte swept the Thundering
Herd on the road and have now won nine straight and 11 of their
last 13.
Lasko's historic week for Rutgers included 14-for-21 at the plate
(.667), five home runs, three doubles, nine runs scored, 14 RBI,
32 total bases, one walk, 2-for-2 stolen bases and .682 OBP/1.524Slug.
The Jackson, New Jersey, native, helped Rutgers to a 4-0 week and
its fourth Big Ten sweep of the season.
Against Hofstra during the midweek, he went 4-for-5 with a double,
two runs scored and drove in four runs. He followed that with a
3-for-4 night at the plate in game one against Ohio State, scoring
two runs and hitting a double. On Saturday, he was 4-for-6, including
three home runs (grand slam), a double, six RBI and four runs scored.
In the series finale on Sunday, he had a 3-for-6 day at the plate
with two round-trippers, a double, four RBI and scoring two runs
to cap the big week.
In his first Friday night start, Ramsey, the Montvale, New Jersey,
native, retired all 27 hitters he faced. Coming into the 2022 season,
there had only been 33 perfect games in NCAA history — just 19 in
nine-inning games.
Ramsey became the first Maryland pitcher to toss a perfecto since
Dick Reitz on April 10, 1959, against Johns Hopkins — which was
the first perfect game in NCAA Division I history. It was the Terps'
first no-hitter since March 1, 2014, when Jake Stinnett no-hit UMass.
Maryland baseball couldn't have been much more perfect on Friday.
On the other side, every player in Maryland's lineup recorded at
least a hit as the offense totaled 13 runs on 17 hits.
