DALLAS (FWAA) – The Navy Midshipmen ended Houston's hopes of an undefeated season with a 46-40 home win Saturday, sending the Navy Brigade onto the field in post-game celebration and the Midshipmen to the top of the American Athletic Conference West Division. The Midshipmen (4-1) beat a top-10 team for the first time since 1984, and thus earned the Football Writers Association of America National Team of the Week honor for games of the weekend of Oct. 8.

The announcement was made on "Playbook," hosted by Chris Carlin and Gino Torretta on SiriusXM Radio's "College Sports Nation." Each Monday during the season, the FWAA National Team of the Week will be unveiled during the program, which airs from 1-4 p.m. ET.

The win will reverberate throughout the Naval Academy for a few extra days, as the Superintendent of the Academy announced there would be no school Tuesday "in honor of the win."

Will Worth ran for 115 yards and threw for two touchdowns to lead Navy's upset. The Midshipmen's precise running game dashed through Houston's national-leading rushing defense, gaining 306 yards on the ground in their triple-option attack. Houston came into the game allowing only 42 yards per game on the ground.

Navy scored three touchdowns in the third quarter, two of them on passes by Worth, the other on Josiah Powell's 34-yard interception return to take a 41-27 lead.

"Sometimes you get your butt whipped and you move on," said Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo said, referencing Navy's loss at Air Force last week. "I'm so proud of the way our guys responded after such a difficult, heart-wrenching, gut-blowing loss last week."

Other National Team of the Week nominees for the weekend of Oct. 8 included:

• BYU (3-3): The Cougars came back from a 7-3 halftime deficit to score touchdowns on all four of their second-half possessions to win at Michigan State, 31-14. Jamaal Williams ran for 163 yards and two touchdowns, and Taysom Hill had two scores in the second half while BYU's defense shut down MSU after giving up a touchdown on the opening drive.

• Washington State (3-2): Luke Falk threw for 357 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Cougars to a 42-16 win at No. 15 Stanford and snap an eight-game losing streak to the Cardinal. It was WSU's second straight win over one of the Pac-12's recent powers, following last week's 51-33 win over Oregon, which has combined with Stanford to win the last seven Pac-12 titles.

The Football Writers Association of America has named a national team of the week since the 2002 season. Members of the 12-person FWAA All-America Committee – plus one fan vote from Twitter – decide the weekly honor.

Founded in 1941, the Football Writers Association of America consists of 1,400 men and women who cover college football. The membership includes journalists, broadcasters and publicists, as well as key executives in all the areas that involve the game. The FWAA works to govern areas that include game-day operations, major awards and its annual All-America team.
