DALLAS (NCBWA) – The National Collegiate Baseball
Writers Association (NCBWA) released its National Player
of the Week awards for the period ending April 1. Oklahoma State
senior outfielder Jon Littell was named
National Hitter of the Week, while Cal State Fullerton
junior right-handed pitcher Coltman Eastman was
named National Pitcher of the Week.
The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference
each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.
Littell sizzled at the plate and led Oklahoma State to a perfect
4-0 week that included a road win at Oklahoma and the Cowboys’ first-ever,
three-game Big 12 series sweep of No. 18 ranked TCU. The senior
outfielder was 9-for-15 (.600) at the plate with three doubles,
two triples and four RBIs. He also scored nine runs, drew five walks,
stole a base and turned in a 1.067 slugging percentage.
In leading the Cowboys to a sweep of TCU, Littell lit up the
Big 12’s top pitching staff, going 8-for-11 (.727) with three doubles,
a pair of triples and four RBIs. He scored nine runs and collected
15 total bases and a 1.364 slugging percentage. In the series opener
he tied a career high with four hits and four runs as he went 4-for-4.
In the final two games, he had two hits and two RBIs in each contest.
Littell hit safely in all four games during the week to extend his
hitting streak to eight games, and he raised his season batting
average 62 points to .283.
Eastman pitched easily his best game of his collegiate baseball
career, tossing 9.0 shutout innings, without allowing a run or hit,
while striking out seven and just walking one. The no-hitter marked
Fullerton's first since Justin Garza also recorded one in a 3-0
win over CSUN on May 24, 2014. The no-no was just the Titans' first
no-hitter on the road, as the previous four came at home.
Fullerton's no-no is the 17th in DI baseball so far this year,
which already breaks the all-time record for no-hitters in a single
season set in 2013. Eastman also wears No. 17.
