DALLAS (NCBWA) The National Collegiate Baseball Writers
Association (NCBWA) released its National Player of the Week awards
for the period ending May 6. Georgia junior first baseman
Adam Sasser was named National Hitter of
the Week, while TCU sophomore left-handed pitcher
Haylen Green was named National Pitcher
of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each
Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout
the season.
Sasser batted .538 (7-for-13) with four home runs and 10 RBI
to lead Georgia to a three-game SEC road sweep of Missouri. The
Evans, Ga., native tied a school record with three home runs in
one game in thje Bulldogs 10-6 win on Thursday. On Saturday, he
belted his fourth home that capped a 10-pitch at bat in the team's
7-1 victory.
Green was brilliant in his second start of the season. The Lufkin,
Texas, native faced just two batters over the minimum, needed just
90 pitches to fire his first career complete game. He retired the
first 14 batters he faced in the game and allowed just three total
base runners. Green finished the afternoon with a career-high 11
strikeouts.
The first Lamar batter to reach did so on a two-out error in
the fifth. Greens first hitter to reach safely didnt come until
a lead-off walk in the seventh. A lead-off single by Chad McKinney
in the ninth broke up the no-hitter, but he was erased on a double
play ball.
He became only the fourth pitcher in school history to toss a
solo nine inning one-hitter. It was the 19th one-hitter in school
history.
