DALLAS (NCBWA) – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers
Association released its National Player of the Week awards for
the period ending February 23. Dallas Baptist junior shortstop
Blayne Jones was named National Hitter
of the Week, while Kansas State sophomore left-handed
pitcher Jordan Wicks was named National
Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates
from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each
Tuesday throughout the season.
A preseason All-American selection, Jones hit .417 (5-for-12)
with four home runs, 10 RBI and five runs scored in DBU's
three-game sweep over Austin Peay. He also totaled a team-high
17 bases and led the team with a 1.417 slugging percentage. In
Saturday's 13-2 victory on opening day, Jones blasted two home
runs for the first time in his career as part of a 4-RBI day. On
Sunday, Jones followed suit with his first career grand slam. He
ended the series on Monday, going 1-for-2 with a home run, 2
RBI, two walks and two runs scored. Defensively, Jones player
error-free baseball in 14 chances at shortstop.
Wicks, a preseason All-American and preseason Big 12
Co-Pitcher of the Year, began the season with seven shutout
innings against Oregon State at the Sanderson Ford College
Classic. Wicks allowed just three hits over seven innings while
equaling his career high with 10 strikeouts. The lefty retired
18 of the final 20 hitters he faced to give the Wildcats the
Opening Day win.
