DALLAS (NCBWA) The National Collegiate
Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released its
National Player of the Week awards for the period ending March
14, today. LSU sophomore third baseman Cade Doughty
was named National Hitter of the Week, while
Louisiana Tech junior right-handed pitcher Jarett Whorff
was named National Pitcher of the Week. The
NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference
each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.
Doughty, a native of Denham Springs, Louisiana, collected
five home runs, six runs scored and 12 RBI in leading LSU to
five wins in five games last week. He was 7-for-21 at the plate
with five walks and a .444 on-base percentage.
Doughty hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the 10th
inning Saturday versus UT San Antonio to erase a 7-4 deficit and
extend the game into the 11th inning, and LSU went on to post a
10-9 victory in 13 innings.
Whorff pitched a complete-game shutout while allowing no hits
over the final seven innings to lead LA Tech to its first win
over a No. 1 team in program history. The Winnsboro, Texas
native recorded 10 strikeouts and just one walk in the dominant
performance, using his 106th pitch of the afternoon to get
Arkansas Brady Slavens to strike out looking to cap off the
win.
Whorff limited the Razorbacks to two hits in Sundays win,
which was the first time the Razorbacks had been held to two
hits since Oregon State blanked the Hogs in the College World
Series final in 2018. Whorff had all of his pitches working on
Sunday, retiring the top-ranked Razorbacks in order five out of
the nine innings he pitched. After LA Tech jumped ahead 2-0 in
the fifth, pitching with the lead did not phase Techs starter
over the next three frames as Whorff retired the next nine
Razorbacks in order, four of which came via a strikeout.
