Sooners were the preseason favorite |
OKLAHOMA IS TOP-RANKED IN
GRANTLAND RICE SUPER 16
POLL |
DALLAS (FWAA) – The Oklahoma Sooners are the top-ranked team in the
FWAA/Grantland Rice Super 16 Poll. The preseason No. 1 pick by the 16-member panel has
opened the season 6-0, punctuated by its 65-13 trouncing of arch-rival Texas this past Saturday.
With that decisive win, the Grantland Rice poll voters have also named the Sooners the FWAA's
National Team of the week.
While Oklahoma earned all 16 first-place votes to be the unanimous No. 1 choice, No. 2 Miami
received 12 of the 16 second-place votes, following by Big East rival Virginia Tech, ranked 3rd.
The Hokies rose from No. 8 in the preseason poll. Washington State, made the biggest leap, going
from unranked to No. 6. The preseason poll's 5th-, 6th- and 7th-ranked teams – Kansas State,
Texas and Michigan – all dropped from the Top 16.
The Big Ten leads all conferences with five ranked teams, although its top team, Ohio State,
is ranked No. 8. Georgia, at No. 4, leads four Southeastern Conference teams among the Super 16.
Other teams nominated for Team of the Week included Miami after its win at Florida State,
Missouri for its upset of Nebraska and Wisconsin for ending Ohio State's 17-game winning streak.
The FWAA National Team of the Week will continue to be announced in conjunction with the Grantland Rice Super 16 each Monday throughout the season.
