DALLAS (FWAA) – By virtue of their 23-0 win at Auburn, the
Southern
California Trojans have been named as the Football Writers Association of America's
National Team of the Week for games of the weekend of Aug. 30.
The honor is decided by the 16-member panel that votes in the organization's Grantland
Rice Super 16 Poll, which is in its second season.
Matt Leinart passed for 192 yards in his first start and the 9th-ranked Trojans set up
17 points with three turnovers as Auburn, No. 4 in the FWAA's preseason Grantland Rice Super
16 Poll, was shut out at home for the first time since 1998.
The only other team nominated was Northern Illinois, which stunned No. 16 Maryland, 20-13
in overtime, last Thursday.
The FWAA Team of the Week will be announced each Monday throughout the season. The
extended holiday weekend of action delayed this first announcement.
The Grantland Rice Super 16 Poll, released in the preseason, will resume on Monday, Oct. 13.
The FWAA, in conjunction with the Charlotte Touchdown Club, will also resume its Bronko Nagurski
National Defensive Player of the Week award this season beginning after the games of Sept. 6.
