DALLAS (FWAA) – Washington linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven posted a career-high 20 tackles with 14 solo tackles to spearhead a defense that held Arizona State to 268 total yards in a 27-20 win. Burr-Kirven's tackle total was the highest by a Washington player in 22 years and earned him the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week honor for games of the weekend of Sept. 22, as selected by the Football Writers Association of America.

The 6-0, 221-pound senior from Menlo Park, Calif., also forced two fumbles and recovered one of them. His 53 total tackles on the season are 30 more than any other Huskies player. He paced a complete defensive effort by Washington, which held ASU to 104 yards passing – 215 yards below their average coming into the game – and his fumble recovery was Washington's lone takeaway.

Burr-Kirven had 11 tackles at halftime against ASU and passed his previous career high of 13 tackles with three more during the Sun Devils' first drive of the third quarter. The Huskies have yet to give up a touchdown in the second or third quarters this season, allowing only two field goals during those frames. The 20 tackles were the highest total since John Fiala had 22, also against ASU, in 1996. Burr-Kirven was a member of the CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 team and was an Academic All-Pac-12 First Team member in 2017.

Each Tuesday during the regular season, the FWAA has selected a Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week since 2001. Burr-Kirven, a three-year letterman, is a member of the Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List. The FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club will announce five finalists for the 2018 Bronko Nagurski Trophy on Wed., Nov. 14. The winner will be chosen from those five finalists who are part of the 2018 FWAA All-America Team.

The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the association's entire membership, selects a 26-man All-America Team and eventually the Bronko Nagurski Trophy finalists. The committee members then select the winner as the best defensive player in college football.

The annual Bronko Nagurski Trophy Banquet, presented by ACN, will be held on Mon., Dec. 3 at the Charlotte Convention Center. In addition to the 2018 Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner's announcement, the banquet will also celebrate the recipient of the Bronko Nagurski Legends Award, sponsored by the Rolle Oral & Facial Surgery.

The FWAA has chosen a National Defensive Player of the Year since 1993. In 1995, the FWAA named the award in honor of the legendary two-way player from the University of Minnesota. Nagurski dominated college football then became a star for professional football's Chicago Bears in the 1930s. Bronislaw "Bronko" Nagurski is a charter member of both the College Football and Pro Football Halls of Fame.
