DALLAS (NCBWA) – Slugging outfielder Eric Baldwin of the
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and no-hit pitcher Josh Spitzack
of Gustavus Adolphus College have been named the 2005 NCAA Division III
National Hitter of the Week and Pitcher of the Week for March 28-April
3 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Baldwin, a senior right fielder from Beaver Dam, Wisc., helped No. 3-ranked
Wisconsin-Whitewater to a 6-0 mark in six conference games during the week
by batting 16-for-26 (.615) with 14 RBIs, 12 runs scored, five doubles,
one triple and four home runs. He had multiple hits in all six games, including
three hits in three contests, and compiled a 1.346 slugging percentage.
He was 3-5 with a home run, a double and three RBIs in an 8-4 victory over
Wisconsin-Platteville on March 29. In a 20-0 win over Wisconsin-Superior
on April 3, he was 3-6 with two home runs, four RBIs and two runs scored.
He also was 3-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored in the opening game
against the Yellowjackets on April 3. He was the Wisconsin Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week.
Spitzack, a junior from West Concord, Minn., threw a 7-inning no-hitter
as the Gusties opened MIAC play with a 5-0 win over Carleton in Northfield
last Saturday. He faced 24 batters (three over the minimum) as he walked
three batters and had one reach on an error. He picked one of the batters
he walked off first base in the first inning. He struck out seven batters
and coerced nine more to ground into infield outs. It is the first complete-game
no-hitter thrown by a Gustavus pitcher in over 15 years. Spitzack is now
3-1 on the season with an earned run average of 2.76. He was the Minnesota
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week.

Wisconsin-Oshkosh tied a national record by turning six double plays in
a nine-inning game in a 13-11 win over Marian (Ind.) on Apr. 3.
