DALLAS (NCBWA) Red-hot first baseman Jason Mooneyham
of Chapman University (Orange, Calif.) and relief ace Bryan Lambert
of Brandeis University (Waltham, Mass.) have been named the 2005 NCAA
Division III National Hitter of the Week and Pitcher of the Week for
April 18-24 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Mooneyham, a senior from Santa Margarita, Calif., batted .733 (11-for-15)
with six doubles, 17 total bases, a 1.133 slugging pct., eight RBI, and
four runs scored in the Panthers 5-0 week. He reached base in 17-of-21
at-bats for an on-base pct. of .809 and was named "top hitter" at the Chapman
Invitational Tournament, which the Panthers won (3-0). He had a 4-for-5
game with three doubles vs. Whittier and a 3-for-4 game vs. Willamette.
He is on pace to break his own school record for on-base percentage, currently
at .592. In the field, he has not committed an error this season in 343
chances.
Lambert, a senior from Auburn, Maine, led the Judges to a 3-1 week last
week, appearing in all four contests with a 1-0 record and two saves. In
9.2 innings of relief work, he allowed three hits and one run while striking
out eight and walking none. He picked up his ninth save of the season by
striking out two in 1.1 innings in an 8-6 loss vs. UMass-Dartmouth, then
struck out the only two batters he faced in a 3-2 loss at Bowdoin. Vs. Johnson
and Wales, he had his longest outing of the season, tossing the final five
innings of a 12-inning 4-3 victory. He allowed three hits and one run, all
in his first inning of work, and allowed just two base runners in the final
four innings. Against No. 24-ranked Wheaton (Mass.), he went 2.2 innings,
allowing no hits with three strikeouts, for his 10th save of the season.
He is tied for the NCAA lead in saves, while his 0.98 ERA is among the top
10 in the nation. With 17 career saves, he is tied as Brandeis's career
leader with David McDonald.
