DALLAS (NCBWA) The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association
has announced its second weekly award winners for the 2006 NCAA Division
III season, with top honors going to outfielder Troy Beaver of Juniata
College (Huntingdon, Pa.) and right-handed pitcher Matt Woods of
Sewanee-University of the South (Sewanee, Tenn.) for March 6-12.
Beaver, a senior from Bellwood, Pa., sparked Juniatas offense as the
Eagles went 5-1 in their final six games in Phoenix, Ariz. Hitting in the
lead-off spot, Beaver batted .667 (14-21), reaching base 23 times over six
games, including one game in which he reached base seven times in seven
plate appearances, with a remarkable 18 runs scored. He had at least one
hit in each game, and had two or more hits in four of the contests. He scored
at least two runs in five of the games and three or more runs on four occasions,
with five runs scored in an 18-10 win over Beloit. He stole four bases on
the week, while his four doubles helped him post a .857 slugging percentage.
Beaver also drove in six runs on the week.
Woods, a senior from Decatur, Ga., tossed a six-hit, complete game shutout
as the Tigers defeated Oglethorpe 11-0 on Friday. Woods struck out seven
and walked just one in the nine-inning blanking. Only three runners reach
second base and he retired 11 of the last 12 batters he faced, with the
lone base runner reaching on an error. Woods is now 4-0 lifetime against
Oglethorpe, with three complete game wins which include two complete game
shutouts. In those four contests, he has pitched 30.0 innings and allowed
just 20 hits and three earned runs (0.90 ERA) with 22 strikeouts and six
walks. He was the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher of the
Week.
