DALLAS (NCBWA) – Five home runs and a plus-.700 batting average by first baseman Thomas Phillips of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a perfect game by John Lunardi of Susquehanna University have earned them the fifth NCAA Division III National Hitter of the Week and Pitcher of the Week honors for 2009, covering the week of March 23-29, as voted on by a panel of members from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Phillips, a righty-swinging senior from Durham, N.C., enjoyed a monster week at the plate, going 14-for-18 with a double, five home runs, eight runs scored, and 12 RBI in five games. In a doubleheader against the University of Chicago, he finished 6-for-6 with three home runs and seven runs batted in. In a doubleheader against Wheaton, he went 7-for-8 with four RBI. For the week, he batted .778 with an on-base percentage of .810 and a slugging percentage of 1.667. Phillips was named the New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference Player of the Week. Lunardi, a senior right-hander from Exton, Pa., was named the Landmark Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second straight week as he tossed a perfect game to give the Crusaders a 9-0 win over Drew University in the first game of a Landmark doubleheader. He faced the minimum possible of 21 hitters over seven innings to earn the victory, striking out seven and using just 82 pitches to record the perfect game. Lunardi’s feat makes it four weeks in a row that the D-III Pitcher of the Week has thrown a no-hitter.
