DALLAS (NCBWA) – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending Feb. 27. Louisiana-Monroe junior infielder Corben Green was named National Hitter of the Week, while Virginia junior left-hander Danny Hultzen was named National Pitcher of the Week. Green continued his hot start to the season as he extended his hitting streak out to all eight games this season and hit for the cycle in a 5-for-5 performance against Northwestern State. In four road games, the Tuscaloosa, Ala., native hit .588 (10-for-17) with two doubles, a triple, a home run and nine RBIs on the week. He finished the week with a 1.000 slugging percentage, had an RBI in three of the four games and averaged 4.25 total bases per game.

Hultzen shook off adverse weather conditions in pitching the Cavaliers to a 10-1 win over visiting East Carolina in Friday night’s three-game series opener. Despite a 20-to-25 mph wind blowing straight out, the Bethesda, Md., native recorded one of the most dominating pitching outings in recent Virginia baseball history. In seven innings of work, Hultzen set a career high with 15 strikeouts while not walking a batter. The 15-strikeout effort was the most by a Cavalier since Seth Greisinger racked up 16 strikeouts against North Carolina on March 23, 1996. After giving up a single to start the game, He retired the next 19 batters from the first into the seventh inning, with just one ball leaving the infield in that span. He went to a three-ball count just two times and struck out the side on three occasions.
