NCBWA NAMES DIVISION I
NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

DALLAS (NCBWA) – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association released its National Player of the Week awards for the period ending February 26. Wichita State junior first baseman Johnny Coy was named National Hitter of the Week, while Appalachian State senior right-hander Ryan Arrowood was named National Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.

Coy Arrowood

Coy led the Shockers to a 5-0 week as he went 15-for-25 (.600) with eight runs, three doubles, two home runs and 20 RBIs. He had multiple hits in all five games and had RBIs in four of the five games. At Oral Roberts, he went 2-for-5 with a run and in game one against North Dakota, he went 2-for-5 with a run, an RBI and a double. In game two against UND, he went 3-for-5 with three runs and seven RBIs and in game three, he went 4-for-5 with three RBIs, a run and two doubles. He finished off the series with UND, going 4-for-5 with two runs, two home runs and nine RBIs. The nine RBIs was one shy of the school record and was the most since Drew Moffitt set the record with 10 in 2004. The four hits and nine RBIs were both career-highs, while the two doubles and two home runs both tied career-highs.

Arrowood turned in a stellar performance, as he pitched seven shutout innings to beat No. 7 LSU, 1-0, on Saturday. The senior right-hander retired 16 straight batters after facing a two-on, no-out jam in the first. He struck out five in a row twice during that stretch as the Rutherfordton, N.C., native retired 20 of the final 21 batters he faced and 20-of-23 overall. In total, Arrowood allowed just two hits and one walk and matched a career high with 10 strikeouts, as the Mountaineers became the first non-conference team to shutout the Tigers in nearly eight years.
