NCBWA NAMES DIVISION I
NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

DALLAS (NCBWA) – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association released its National Player of the Week awards for the period ending March 25. Baylor junior first baseman Max Muncy was named National Hitter of the Week, while Hartford freshman left-hander Sean Newcomb was named National Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.

Muncy Newcomb

Muncy hit .500 (9-for-18) to lead Baylor to a 4-0 record last week, including a weekend sweep of Kansas. The junior had two home runs, two doubles, nine RBI and seven runs scored. He totaled 17 total bases for a .944 slugging percentage. In the series finale on Sunday, Muncy smacked a game-winning two-run double with two outs in the eighth inning. It was his fourth hit in the contest and broke a 6-6 tie.

The Keller, Texas native also homered twice and drove in five runs in the second game of the Kansas series. In Friday's series opener, he singled and scored two runs. Muncy started his week with a double, a single, a walk, two RBI and a run in a midweek win at Sam Houston State. His offensive performance helped the Bears open Big 12 play 6-0, Baylor's best start in the league's 16-year history. He ranks fifth in the Big 12 in hits and RBI through six weeks of play.

Newcomb led the Hawks' pitching staff with the program's first Division I no-hitter in the series finale against Yale on Saturday afternoon, a 2-0 win. The rookie lefty became the first America East pitcher to throw a no-hitter this season and the second rookie pitcher to throw one in as many years after Stony Brook’s Frankie Vanderka hurled one almost a year ago to the day.

Newcomb threw his first collegiate complete game, a seven-inning effort, which resulted in his first collegiate victory. The Middleboro, Mass., native mowed down 10 opposing batters, walking two, and shut out the Bulldogs.
