DALLAS (NCBWA) – Delaware Valley senior Kyle
Wenger and Salve Regina freshman Peter Maybach
were named Division III National Collegiate Baseball
Writers Association Hitter and Pitcher of the Week for
the period of March 6-12.
Wenger, an outfielder from Souderton, Pa., led the Aggies to
a 5-0 week while batting .550 (11-for-20) and slugging 1.100
with three doubles, a triple, two home runs, nine runs scored
and eight RBIs. Wenger hit for the cycle, going 4-for-4 with two
runs scored and two RBI in a 3-2 win over Bridgewater State. The
Middle Atlantic Conference’s Freedom Player of the Week also
went 3-for-7 with four RBI, three runs scored, a double and a
home run in a doubleheader sweep of Geneva, and, in a
doubleheader sweep of Norwich, Wenger recorded three hits with 3
RBI and two runs scored in game one.
Maybach, a left-handed hurler from Saunderstown, R.I., made a
huge debut for the Seahawks. In a 3-0 win over Rochester
Institute of Technology, he was one out away from a
complete-game, nine-inning no-hitter and gave up just two
singles after 8.2 innings of play. The Commonwealth Coast
Conference Pitcher of the Week struck out 11 and only walked one
in the contest.
Honorable Mention Hitters: Kyle Bouchard
(Fr., 1B, Nichols): Helped his team earn a 3-1 record, including
a big win over regional powerhouse Wheaton. The first baseman
had four-hit games in every contest the Bison played and
finished with 16 hits and 13 runs batted in in just four games.
His impressive batting average (.680) currently makes him second
in the country, while he’s also leading the conference in RBI
(13); Taylor Black (Sr., 3B, St. Joseph’s [Maine]): Hit .625
(15-24) with a .630 OBP and a 1.000 slugging percentage with
eight runs, five doubles, two triples, and 11 RBI in six games
(4-2) last week. The senior captain had at least two hits in
every game, including three three-hit efforts and had no errors
in 18 chances at the hot corner.
Honorable Mention Pitchers: Zach Cooney
(Jr., RHP, Neumann): Threw seven innings of no-hit ball against
Salisbury in a 6-1 win over the Sea Gulls March 6. He struck out
five and walked one in the win, combining with Zach Youngberg
for the no-hitter; Austin Ver Steeg (Fr., RHP, Concordia
[Minn.]): Threw a complete game, three-hit shutout against NCAA
Division II Concordia-St. Paul on March 11. Ver Steeg also
struck out four against the Golden Bears while only allowing
runners to get into scoring position on three occasions. Each
time that Concordia-St. Paul advanced a runner to second base
there were two outs in the inning, Ver Steeg was able to get the
next batter to hold the Golden Bears to 0-for-3 with runners in
scoring position.
