ST. LOUIS (USBWA) Demitrius Underwood
of The University of Texas at Dallas (Richardson, Texas) and
Allison Chernow of Emory University (Atlanta, Ga.)
were named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Division
III National Players of the Week for the week ending November
25.
Underwood, a 6-2 junior guard from Mesquite, Texas, posted three
double-doubles as the Comets (5-1) won all four of their games last
week. After totaling 16 points, eight rebounds, five steals, three
assists, and one block in a 93-56 win over Schreiner on Monday,
Underwood totaled 22 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, a steal and
block, and hit the game-winning layup with 13 seconds remaining
in his teams 72-71 victory over Hardin-Simmons on Wednesday. Then,
playing in the Trinity (Texas) Tournament over the weekend, Underwood
recorded 29 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, four blocks, and
a steal as the Comets defeated then-No. 6 Whitworth (D3hoops.com)
88-79 on Saturday. In Sundays contest against host Trinity, Underwood
totaled 20 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, and three steals. For
the week, he averaged 21.7 ppg, 9.7 rpg, 4.0 apg, 2.5 spg, and 1.5
bpg. Overall, Underwood shot 56.1 percent (32-of-57) from the field,
80 percent (20-of-25) from the foul line and 33.3 percent (3-of-9)
from three-point range. For his efforts, Underwood was also named
the American Southwest Conference (ASC) Player of the Week.
Chernow, a 5-6 junior guard from Dresher, Pa., averaged 32 points,
6.5 rebounds. 4.5 assists, and 0.5 blocks per game as the Eagles
(3-2) split their two contests last week. In a 90-87 double-overtime
loss to host Transylvania at the Gratz Park Private Wealth Classic
on Saturday, Chernow scored a career-high 39 points (second-highest
in program history), including a school-record-tying and NCAA Division
III-best nine three-pointers (9-of-11). She added five rebounds
and five assists in the contest, while accumulating 22 of her points
in the fourth quarter and overtimes. Then, against Denison on Sunday,
Chernow totaled 25 points (11 in the fourth quarter), eight rebounds,
four assists, and a steal in Emorys 69-57 victory. Overall, she
shot 58.1 percent (18-of-31) from the field, 89.5 percent (17-of-19)
from the free-throw line and 73.3 percent (11-of-15) from behind
the arc. For her efforts, Chernow was also named the University
Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week.
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was
formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter
Byers. With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential
organizations in college basketball. It has selected an All-America
