ST. LOUIS (USBWA) – Nate Schimonitz
of Nebraska Wesleyan University (Lincoln, Neb.) and Tessa
Zamolyi of Misericordia University (Dallas, Pa.) were named
the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Division III National
Players of the Week for the week ending November 10.
Schimonitz, a 6-4 senior guard from Omaha, Neb., filled up the
box score in wins over Saint John's University (Minn.) and the University
of Wisconsin Superior last week. On Friday, he scored 26 points
(10-of-20 FT, 5-of-6 FT, 1-of-4 3FG), collected 10 rebounds, recorded
six assists, and added seven steals in a 78-56 victory over the
No. 12 (D3hoops.com) Johnnies. Then, against the Yellowjackets on
Saturday, Schimonitz totaled 32 points (14-of-18 FG, 4-of-4 FT,
0-1 3FG), seven rebounds, six assists, and two steals. Over the
two games for the No. 8 Prairie Wolves (2-0), he averaged 29 points,
8.5 rebounds, six assists, and 4.5 steals while shooting 63 percent
(24-of-38) from the field, 90 percent (9-of-10) from the foul line
and 20 percent (1-of-5) from three-point range. For his efforts,
Schimonitz was also named the American Rivers Conference (ARC) Player
of the Week.
Zamolyi, a 6-0 junior guard/forward from Bethlehem, Pa., produced
a pair of double-doubles and career highs in leading the Cougars
(2-0) to back-to-back victories. On Friday, in a 93-41 wipeout of
the University of Valley Forge, she scored a career-high 31 points
and totaled 14 rebounds, while also recording an assist and two
steals. Then, on Saturday against Gwynedd Mercy University, Zamolyi
scored 24 points and collected a career-best 19 rebounds. She also
contributed three assists, two steals and a block in the 107-86
victory. Over the two games, Zamolyi averaged 27.5 points, 16.5
rebounds, two assists, two steals, and 0.5 blocks. She shot 63.8
percent (23-of-36) from the field, 77.8 percent (7-of-9) from the
foul line and 50 percent (2-of-4) from three-point range. For her
efforts, Zamolyi was also named the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC)
Freedom Player of the Week.
Each Tuesday, the USBWA is selecting men's and women's Division
III National Players of the Week. This is the sixth season that
the USBWA will recognize national players of the week from Division
III.
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at
the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. With some
900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations
in college basketball. It has selected an All-America team since
