Grantland Rice Trophy, poll voting procedures change this season The entire FWAA membership will be asked to take part in the 2007 Grantland Rice Super 16 Preseason Poll this season. The poll will be released in late August.
For the past five seasons, 16 selected members have taken part in a weekly poll that has also decided the winner of the Grantland Rice Trophy. While each of the 900-plus FWAA members may vote in the preseason poll, the regular season Super 16 Poll will be discontinued. The Grantland Rice Trophy will continue to be rewarded after the completion of the Bowl Championship Series and a panel of national writers and past FWAA presidents will make that decision. Also, the FWAA will continue to present a National Team of the Week, which has been sponsored by the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl for each of the past two seasons. The panel that votes on the Grantland Rice Trophy will decide the weekly nominees and winner. The Grantland Rice Trophy has been presented to college football's national champion each year since 1954. It was the first national championship trophy to be presented after the post-season. The trophy is named in honor of the legendary sportswriter Grantland Rice, who passed away before the '54 season. Florida is the defending FWAA national champion.
