CHICAGO (NCBWA) – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers
Association (NCBWA) has released its first-ever Division III National
Hitter and Pitcher of the Week awards for the period ending March 9.
Guilford's Brad Franklin was named the National Hitter of the
Week, while Bridgewater junior RHP Dustin Jones won the Pitcher of
the Week honors. A panel of Division III NCBWA members reviews candidates
from each Division III Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday
throughout the season.
A senior from Greensboro, N.C., Franklin leads Guilford in runs, hits,
triples, homers, RBI and steals. He is also in the midst of a 10-game hitting
streak. Franklin hit for the cycle in a 4-for-6 performance in the second
game of the Quakers' doubleheader sweep of EMU. He hit an inside the park
grand slam in the game and finished with five RBI. Franklin was also 4-for-6
with three homers in a doubleheader sweep of Franklin & Marshall. Through
10 games, he is hitting .381 with 20 runs, 24 hits, five doubles, four triples,
five homeruns and 25 RBI. Franklin was also a perfect 9-for-9 in stolen
bases.
Jones made three appearances this past week, two starts and one in relief.
Jones pitched 7 innings against No. 21 Kean and received a no-decision after
leaving in the seventh with a 2-1 lead. BC lost the game 3-2. Jones allowed
one earned run and four hits. He struck out 10 and walked 0. He pitched
3.2 innings in relief in an extra-inning loss to DeSales. He allowed no
runs and three hits. Jones struck out three and walked none. He also pitched
a complete-game (7 innings) in a 5-1 victory over Roanoke College, allowing
one run on three hits. He struck out 13 and walked 1. For the season, Jones
is 2-0 with a 0.93 ERA. He has pitched 19.1 innings, allowing just 2 earned
runs and 10 hits. Jones has struck out 27 and walked just 2 and opponents
are hitting just .152 against him.
