DALLAS (NCBWA) The National Collegiate
Baseball Writers Association released its NCAA
Division II National Players of the Week awards for the
week ending on March 15. Azusa Pacific junior third baseman
Adrian Tovalin is the National Hitter of
the Week, while West Texas A&M senior pitcher
Joshua Payne is the National Pitcher of
the Week.
Tovalin (San Diego, Calif./Otay Ranch HS), exploded in No. 5
APUs four-game series split with Fresno Pacific, hitting .538 (7-13)
with six home runs, six runs scored and 16 RBI. After starting the
series 0-for-2 with a sacrifice fly, Tovalin went 7-for-11 over
the final three games. He went 4-for-4 with three home runs and
nine RBI in the third game, and hit two more homers in the finale.
Tovalin leads the PacWest in home runs (10) and doubles (7), and
is second in RBI (31) and slugging percentage (.912).
Payne (West Haven, Utah/Freemont HS) pitched a gem of a game
against No. 10 Texas A&M-Kingsville as he tossed a complete
game shutout allowing two hits in nine innings, while walking one
and fanning a career-high 16 Javelinas in a 7-0 win on Saturday.
It was Paynes first complete game shutout as a Buff and TAMUK hit
just .069 against him. After allowing two hits in the first three
innings, Payne retired the next 12-straight and a walk in the eighth
was the only other base runner for the Javelinas the rest of game.
Paynes performance gave WT the second win of the series en route
to the sweep.
