Football Writers Association of America OUTLAND TROPHY
Presented to honor the Nation's Outstanding Interior Lineman
ALL-TIME WINNERS | OUTLAND WINNERS IN THE NFL DRAFT | HALL OF FAMERS
John Outland

John H. Outland, a Quaker, first began playing football at Penn College (Oskaloosa, Iowa) in the early 1890s. He played on the team’s first two football squads in 1892 and 1893. He was also a captain of the team.

In the fall of 1895, Outland entered the University of Kansas. Three days later, he was playing on the varsity team. After a 6-1 season, he transferred to Pennsylvania where he found his home. From 1897-99, Outland and Hall of Fame teammate Truxton Hare led the University of Pennsylvania to a 35-4-3 record.

One of only a few players in history to be named All-America at two positions, John Outland garnered consensus All-America honors at the University of Pennsylvania in 1897 at tackle and consensus All-America honors at back in 1898.

Outland obtained his medical degree and was a surgeon during World War I, rising to the rank of major. He tried his hand at coaching at Franklin & Marshall College in 1900, Kansas in 1901, and Washburn in 1904-05.

Outland had always contended that football tackles and guards deserved greater recognition and conceived the Outland Trophy as a means of providing this recognition. Today, the Outland Trophy, founded in 1946, is recognized as one of the nation's most prestigious awards, given to the nation's most outstanding interior lineman.

Dr. Outland, inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001, died March 24, 1947. He also has been inducted posthumously into three other athletic halls: William Penn (1986), University of Pennsylvania (2017) and the State of Kansas (1974).
