DALLAS (FWAA) – The unbeaten Oklahoma Sooners did nothing to jeopardize
their No. 1 ranking in the FWAA's Grantland Rice Super 16 Poll after putting
a 77-0 licking on Texas A&M this past Saturday. While USC remained No. 2,
LSU made its way to No. 3 with help from the National Team of the Week,
Clemson.
Clemson's Charlie Whitehurst threw for one touchdown and ran for another
as Clemson snapped an 11-game losing streak to Florida State to earn team
of the week honors. Tommy Bowden's Tigers conquered Bobby Bowden's Seminoles,
26-10, to drop the 'Noles all the way down to a tie at No. 13 with Miami.
The Hurricanes lost to 10-6 Tennessee and had the nation's longest home
winning streak snapped at 26 games.
Tennessee joined Pittsburgh as the week's new poll entries. The Panthers
dropped Virginia Tech, 31-28. Both squads were also among the team of the
week nominees, along with Texas, a 55-16 winner over Oklahoma State, and
Duke, which topped Wake Forest, 42-34.
TCU, the nation's only other unbeaten team, moved into the Top 10 for
the first time at No. 9. Ohio State, one of three one-loss teams, rose to
No. 4 in the poll. Iowa and Michigan State were dropped from the rankings.
