CHICAGO (NBCWA) – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released its National Hitter and Pitcher of the Week awards for the period ending Feb. 2.

Kansas junior leftfielder Ryan Baty (Wichita, Kan.) was named the National Hitter of the Week, while Arizona State senior RHP Jered Liebeck (Glendale, Ariz.) won the Pitcher of the Week honors. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.

Baty batted .619 in the six-game series at Hawaii-Hilo (Jan. 24-26). At one point, the Wichita, Kan., native collected base hits in seven-straight at-bats and, thanks to four walks during that stretch, reached base safely in 11-consecutive plate appearances. In the series versus UHH, Baty, who did not strike out once in the six-game set, led the Jayhawks in hits (13), runs (7), doubles (3), home runs (2), RBI (9), walks (4) and slugging percentage (1.048).

Liebeck turned in a complete-game, three-hit shutout against No. 13 Long Beach State to lead the Sun Devils to a 3-0 win on February 1. Liebeck faced 27 batters in the contest, allowed only one hit after the fourth inning and had only one runner reach second base. He had retired 10 straight heading into the ninth inning before the senior walked his only batter of the game. Liebeck struck out two 49ers to improve to 2-0 in 2003 (1.35 ERA). Liebeck was a honorable mention All-Pac-10 selection in 2002 and now has seven wins in his ASU career.
