CHICAGO (NBCWA) – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers
Association (NCBWA) released its National Hitter and Pitcher of the
Week awards for the period ending Feb. 23.
Florida sophomore first baseman C.J. Smith was named the National
Hitter of the Week, while Wake Forest junior RHP Kyle Sleeth won
the Pitcher of the Week honors. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from
each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout
the season.
Smith, a native of Tampa, had a remarkable week in which he belted three
home runs, went 8-for-12 at the plate with eight runs scored. He hit three
home runs and drove in nine runs, while picking up five a total of five
extra base hits in four games. Smith had a slugging percentage of 1.583
with 19 total bases and had an on-base percentage of .778. He started the
week by scoring a career-best three runs against Florida A&M and he also
hit a homer in that game. Smith opened the series against Hofstra with a
career-high four hits, including two doubles. In game two, he went 1-for-3
and then he finished the series with two homers and a career-high five RBI
in two official at bats.
Sleeth, a Westminster, Colo. native, captured his 22nd straight victory
against James Madison on February 21 facing 28 batters, striking out nine
and allowing no walks. The right-handed pitcher fired eight shutout innings
and has not allowed a run in 14 innings this year while registering 18 strikeouts
and no walks.
