CHICAGO (NBCWA) – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers
Association (NCBWA) released its National Hitter and Pitcher of the
Week awards for the period ending Feb. 9.
Tulane senior centerfielder Jonny Kaplan (Chesterfield, Mo.) was
named the National Hitter of the Week, while Cal State Fullerton junior
RHP Wes Littleton (Oceanside, Calif.) won the Pitcher of the Week
honors. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference
each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.
Kaplan helped Tulane to a season-opening three-game sweep of St. Joseph's
by batting .625 (5-for-8) with a .750 on-base percentage and a 1.375 slugging
percentage, walking four times and scoring six runs. He accounted for all
three Green Wave runs in the season-opening 3-2 win, hitting a two-run homer
and scoring the game-winning run. Kaplan hit a three-run homer on Saturday
and also walked twice, reaching base all four times he came to the plate.
He also was 5-for-5 on stolen base attempts, swiping at least one base in
each game.
Littleton, a second-team preseason All-American, turned in one a dominating
performance in a 12-0 shutout of Fresno State on February 7. The Oceanside,
Calif., native hurled a 75-pitch complete game, faced the minimum number
of batters in the nine-inning game (27) and allowed just one hit – a clean
single by Ryan Haag in the fourth inning. The only other baserunner came
on a first-inning walk to Chris Patrick. Littleton, who struck out seven,
retired the last 17 batters of the game. It marked his second career shutout
and third career complete game.
