NCBWA NAMES PRO-LINE ATHLETIC
NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

DALLAS (NCBWA) – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending February 28.

Fletcher Mitchell
Pro-Line Athletic: The Choice of Champions.
Auburn junior outfielder Brian Fletcher was named National Hitter of the Week, while Texas-Arlington senior right-hander Jason Mitchell was named National Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.

Fletcher hit .636 (7-for-11) with a 1.545 slugging percentage in the Auburn Classic. He collected three home runs, including a walk-off solo homer in the 10th to beat Boston College on Friday night. Fletcher had 11 RBI during the weekend, hit safely in all six games and has an 11-game hitting streak dating back to last season.

The Fayetteville, Ga., native finished the week with multiple hits and multiple RBIs in every game. In game one against Boston College, Fletcher finished with three hits, two runs, two homers and three RBIs. Against Missouri in game two, he collected two hits, a double and four RBIs. In game three against Florida Atlantic, he had two hits, three runs, two walks, a home run and four RBIs.

Mitchell, a senior from Phoenix, Ariz., broke a school and Southland Conference record with 18 strikeouts against Missouri State last Friday. Mitchell carried a no-hitter through 8 2/3 innings and finished the game pitching 9.0 innings, allowing no runs and one walk while throwing 134 pitches (85 strikes). His 18 strikeouts broke the UT Arlington record (previously 16 set by Roger Lancaster in 1997) and Southland Conference all-time record (previously 17 set by Lamar's Clay Hensley in 2002).

Mitchell became the first Maverick ever to carry a no-hitter through 8 2/3 innings. There have been five no-hitters in the history of UTA baseball, all coming in seven inning games. Mitchell struck out at least two hitters in every inning he pitched except for the eighth inning (struck out one). He fanned the first two batters in the ninth inning before giving up a single up the middle – which ended the no-hit bid – and then struck out a third batter to end the ninth inning. Mitchell's previous career-high in strikeouts was six.
