DALLAS (NCBWA) – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers
Association released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player
of the Week awards for the period ending May 16.
UC Riverside junior outfielder Tony Nix was named National
Hitter of the Week, while Old Dominion junior right-hander C.J.
Huyett was named National Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board
reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and
names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.
Nix hit .654 (17-for-26) and registered 15 RBI over six games,
scored 11 times and produced nine extra base hits, including five
doubles, a triple and three home runs. The Poway, Calif., native
posted multiple hits in all six games, including a 6-for-6 performance
in the Highlanders' 16-6 win over Loyola Marymount on Wednesday.
The six hits broke UC Riverside's Division I-era record and tied
the overall school mark. Those six knocks were part of nine consecutive
hits he had during the week.
Nix opened up UCR's Big West series sweep of Cal State Northridge
with a mammoth performance on Friday, going 2-for-5 with two runs
scored, a homer and a career-high tying five RBI in a 13-5 victory.
He also slugged another home run in a 9-3 win on Sunday.
Huyett threw the first no-hitter at Old Dominion since 1997 as
the Monarchs blanked Maryland-Eastern Shore 19-0 last Tuesday. The
Lawrenceville, Pa., native struck out a career-best 11 batters and
walked only one in tossing just the second nine-inning no-hitter
in school history.
