DALLAS (NCBWA) – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers
Association released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player
of the Week awards for the period ending April 11.
Canisius junior infielder Steve McQuail was named National
Hitter of the Week, while Fresno State junior right-handed pitcher
Greg Gonzalez was named National Pitcher of the Week. The
NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each
week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.
In five Canisius victories last week, McQuail hit .562 (9-for-16)
with 10 runs scored, three home runs, 15 RBI, a .619 on-base percentage
and a 1.250 slugging percentage. The junior had two home runs in
Saturday's win at Saint Peter's. The Wantagh, N.Y.,
native also had a tie-breaking
grand slam in the fifth inning of Sunday's 13-4 win over the Peacocks.
McQuail is currently on a 14-game hitting streak, the longest of
his career.
Gonzalez, a San Bruno, Calif., native, made history on April 10 at Les Murakami Stadium, becoming
the seventh Bulldog in Fresno State annals to throw a no-hitter.
In his first career start, the junior threw a seven-inning complete-game
shutout over Hawaii. Gonzalez silenced the Rainbow batters throwing
his first career no-hitter in the second game of a doubleheader.
The last no-hitter by a Bulldog pitcher was in 1976 by Rob Cruess
against Sacramento State. Gonzalez tied his career-high of seven
strikeouts while walking just two batters in his longest outing
of the season. He faced just 22 batters and sat down 17 in order
at one point.
