DALLAS (NCBWA) – Grinnell College's Anthony Mack
and Gallaudet University's Danny O'Donnell picked
up the fourth NCAA Division III National Hitter and Pitcher
of the Week honors for 2014 as voted on by a panel of D-III
members of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Mack, a sophomore infielder from Libertyville, Ill., turned in
meteoric numbers during the Pioneers' Florida spring games. His
bat lit up opposing pitchers with a .552 average in eight games,
going 16-of-29 at the plate with two homers, two doubles and a triple.
Mack pounded out 14 RBI and scored six runs while compiling a slugging
percentage of .897.
O'Donnell, a sophomore hurler from Olney, Md., was lights out
in his appearances during the span. He went 2-0 on the mound and
gave up just one run while striking out 12 batters and posting a
miniscule 0.64 earned run average in 14 innings of work. O'Donnell
opened the week shutting down nationally-ranked Rowan University,
tossing a complete-game shutout while allowing five hits and striking
out seven batters to help the Bison win 2-0 and take down the tenth-ranked
Profs. The North Eastern Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week
would shine once again in his next start four days later, pitching
another complete game and giving up one run on five hits while striking
out five in a 3-1 win over Frostburg State, which came into the
contest averaging 9.25 runs per game and was receiving votes in
the latest NCAA Division III Top 25 poll.
Honorable Mention Hitters: Perry Rigby (Covenant)
- 13-for-21 (.619) with eight RBI, six runs scored, four doubles
and one walk … Colin McCarthy (Johns Hopkins) - Hit .611 with 11
hits in 18 at-bats, scoring 10 runs and driving in six others which
included four doubles, a stolen base and an .833 slugging percentage
and a 1.500 OPS … Mike Marchitto (Gwynedd-Mercy) - 8-for-14 (.571)
with nine RBI's, six runs, three doubles, two homers, and two stolen
bases while posting a 1.214 slugging and .588 on-base percentage.
Honorable Mention Pitchers: Harley Moore (Dickinson)
- Complete-game one-hitter in a 3-0 victory over Penn State-Schuylkill.
He walked four and struck out 14 Nittany Lions in seven innings
of work … Steve Ascher (SUNY-Oneonta) - Second consecutive shutout
against #3 Kean University March 22. Threw nine innings and allowed
only four hits while striking out seven batters.
