Ferrum's Weaver, Adrian's Fischer honored

NCBWA NAMES DIVISION III
NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

DALLAS (NCBWA)Dillon Weaver resumed Ferrum College's recent tendency for no-hit success, while Adrian College's Sam Fischer had a sparkling week at the plate en route to gaining the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association weekly awards for the span of April 14-20.

Weaver, a freshman from Amelia, Va., fired the Panthers' staff's third no-no of 2014 in a 4-0 win over USA South Conference foe Piedmont. In his only outing of the week en route to USA South Conference Pitcher of the Week honors, he went the distance issuing only two weeks and ringing up seven strikeouts. Weaver joins sophomore staff mate Jake Perkins in earning NCBWA Division III Pitcher of the Week accolades this year.

Fischer, a senior outfielder from Monclova, Ohio, hit .750 (12-for-16), including hits in nine consecutive at-bats, and had a slugging percentage of 1.125 as the MIAA-leading Adrian College Bulldogs took three out of four in a weekend series with Trine. He had back-to-back 4-for-4 performances in wins over the Thunder, 10-3 and 9-0. Fischer, the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Hitter of the Week, had six doubles, scored six runs, batted in five and stole three bases for the series.

Honorable Mention Hitters: Ben Podobinski, St. Thomas, .630 (14-of-22) with 13 runs, four RBI, four walks, four stolen bases, three triples, a double and a home run; Chad Jacob, Pitt-Greenburg, .533 (8-for-15) with 3 homers, 1 double, a staggering 10 RBI, and 8 runs scored. Also carried a .529 on-base percentage and 1.200 slugging percentage; Mike Polcyn, Ripon, .611 (11-18) one double, three home runs and 10 RBI which included home runs in three consecutive games.

Honorable Mention Pitcher: Arismendy Nunez, Old Westbury, tossed a seven-inning no-hitter on Apr. 17 as Old Westbury earned a 3-1 win over Stevens, fanning four and walking one; Ben Jernigan, Berry, Recorded 16 strikeouts and had a complete game shutout as Berry College won at Centre College, 4-0 April 18; Trey Martin, Wheaton (Ill.), 3-0 victory over Millikin University April 19. Established a new school record with 15 strikeouts, the second highest single-game strikeout total in Division III this season.

Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball. Membership is open to writers, broadcasters and publicists of the sport. Members receive a membership card, directory, newsletter updates and official votes in the Dick Howser Player of the Year Award, Regional Player of the Year and NCBWA All-America voting. The NCBWA also sponsors preseason All-America awards, publication and writing contests.
