Clemson's Beer, Houston's Romero, South Carolina's Schmidt honored

NCBWA NAMES DIVISION I
NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE MONTH

DALLAS (NCBWA) – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association has released its National Player of the Month awards for March on Monday. Clemson outfielder Seth Beer was named National Hitter of the Month, and Houston southpaw Seth Romero and South Carolina righty Clarke Schmidt have been named Co-Pitchers of the Month.

A 6-foot-2, 195-pound product of Suwanee, Ga., Beer hit .431 (25-for-58) over 17 games during March, belting nine homers and six doubles, driving in 21 runs and owning an 11-8 walk-strikeout ratio. Beer has hit .422 (38-for-90) in his freshman season, with eight doubles, 12 homers and 34 RBI, owning 18 walks and only nine strikeouts, with a 1.433 OPS.

Romero, a native of West Columbia, Texas, posted a 4-0 record and a 0.58 ERA over five outings and four starts in March. Romero worked a complete game and tossed 31 innings, allowing only 10 hits, two earned runs and seven walks, striking out 39 and holding opponents to a .099 average. In 2016, Romero has a 4-1 record and a 1.72 ERA in 36.2 innings, allowing only 18 hits and nine walks, striking out 45. Romero posted wins over Baylor, at No. 23 Alabama, Grand Canyon and George Washington during the month.

A native of Acworth, Ga., Schmidt sported a 4-0 record and a 1.55 ERA in four starts in March, tossing 29 innings, allowing 27 hits and one walk, striking out 37 and holding opponents to a .243 average. On the year, Schmidt has a 6-1 record and a 1.80 ERA in seven starts, tossing 50 innings, allowing 39 hits, 10 earned runs and seven walks, striking out 60. Schmidt had wins over Charleston Southern, Arkansas and at No. 6 Ole Miss, suffering a loss vs. Vanderbilt game in a complete-game effort.
