DALLAS (NCBWA) – The National Collegiate Baseball
Writers Association released its National Player
of the Week awards for the period ending April 17. Penn
State senior outfielder Greg Guers was named
National Hitter of the Week, while Seton Hall sophomore
right-handed pitcher Shane McCarthy was named
National Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews
candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners
each Tuesday throughout the season.
One of the hottest hitters in the country, Guers batted .765
for the week, making just four outs in four games going 13-for-17
with eight RBI, a home run, two doubles and five stolen bases. He
also added two walks for a .789 on-base percentage. He opened the
week by reaching base in all five plate appearances against Bucknell
Wednesday, going 4-for-4 to set a new career high for hits, while
adding a season-high four RBIs, two runs and a walk.
Guers then went 9-for-13 at Northwestern with three-straight
three-hit games. He had back-to-back 3-for-4 games to open the series,
adding two doubles and two RBIs in the second contest. In the finale,
he went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run, double, three runs scored
and three stolen bases.
McCarthy turned in an absolutely dominant outing on April 15
as the right-hander tossed the first perfect game in Seton Hall
history in the Pirates' 10-0 victory over LIU-Brooklyn. The performance
was the fourth complete-game shutout of his career, and second of
the season. He also struck out eight batters in an effort that took
only 88 pitches. The perfect game is only the 27th in NCAA history
since perfect game records started being kept in 1957. McCarthy
improved to 4-3 on the season and lowered his earned run average
to 2.64.
