PEMBROKE, N.C. (NCBWA) A four-game sweep of
then-No. 19 MSU Denver over the weekend helped Colorado Mesa solidify
its spot atop the national ranking on Wednesday as the Mavericks
staked claim to 16 of a possible 18 first-place votes to nestle
into the No. 1 position for the second-straight week.
Sophomore Andrew Morris took a no-hitter into the eighth inning
of Colorado Mesas series-opening victory over the Roadrunners,
while junior Jordan Stubbings hit .529 (9-for-17) in the series
with a pair of dingers and six RBI, to help the Mavericks stretch
their win streak out to 10 games. Lee, which fended off a weekend
sweep with a win over then-No. 24 Shorter on Saturday, raked in
the remaining two first-place votes in Wednesdays release.
Three teams re-entered the NCBWA Division II Top 25 after short
hiatuses. Missouri Southern (No. 16) used a three-game home sweep
of Newman to re-enter the poll after a week absence, which equals
the leave time of St. Thomas Aquinas who checked back into the poll
at No. 21 after stretching its season-opening unbeaten streak out
to 10 games. Catawba (No. 23) is back in the ranking after a two-week
absence thanks to a four-game series sweep of UVa.-Wise.
Charleston (W.Va.) is in the NCBWA Division II Top 25 for the
first time in the 19-year history of the poll. The Golden Eagles
pushed their win streak out to a dozen games after scoring 40 runs
in a four-game sweep of Mountain East Conference rival West Virginia
Wesleyan on Saturday and Sunday.
