ST. LOUIS (USBWA) – Hunter Hill of
Augustana College (Rock Island, Ill.) and Jamie Cuny
of North Central College (Naperville, Ill.) were named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association
Division III National Players of the Week for the week
ending Dec. 14.
Hill, a junior point guard from Byron, Ill., scored a
career-high 41 points as the Vikings (7-1) beat the defending
NCAA Division III national champion and top-ranked
Wisconsin-Whitewater, 96-94, in double overtime on Wednesday.
Hill finished 14-for-21 from the field, including 7-for-10 from
the three-point line, to go along with four steals, two rebounds
and an assist in 44 minutes. In the first overtime, he hit a
three-pointer with 23 seconds left to tie the game at 82, and
after UW-Whitewater took the lead with 19 seconds left on two
free throws, he tied it again with a basket at the 12-second
mark. In the second overtime, Hill hit a three-pointer just 18
seconds into the action to give the then-No. 4-ranked Vikings
(now No. 2) a lead they never relinquished. Hill scored 20 of
the team's 21 points in the two overtime periods.
Cuny, a sophomore forward from Naperville, helped lead the
Cardinals (8-0) to a pair of road victories last week and remain
the only undefeated team in the College Conference of Illinois &
Wisconsin (CCIW). Cuny recorded a double-double of 11 points and
12 rebounds in a 119-53 win at Trinity International on Monday,
as the 66-point victory was the largest margin in program
history. She followed that up with a triple-double of 12 points,
12 rebounds and 10 blocks in only 17 minutes as North Central
defeated Carroll University, 101-97, on Wednesday. The
triple-double was the first in program history, while the 10
blocks set a single-game school record. North Central currently
leads the nation in scoring (100.4 ppg).
Each Tuesday, the USBWA is selecting men's and women's Division III National Players
of the Week. This is the first season that the USBWA will recognize
national players of the week from Division III.
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in
1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers.
With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential
organizations in college basketball. It has selected an All-America
team since the 1956-57 season. For more information on the USBWA
and its award programs, contact executive director Joe Mitch
