ST. LOUIS (USBWA) – Aaron Walton-Moss
of Cabrini College (Radnor, Pa.) and Hayley Kanner
of Tufts University (Medford, Mass.) were named the U.S.
Basketball Writers Association Division III National Players of
the Week for the week ending Jan. 18.
Walton-Moss, a 6-1 senior guard from Camden, N.J., recorded two
triple-doubles last week, averaging 17.5 points, 11.5 rebounds,
11.5 assists, and 2.5 steals for the Cavaliers of the Colonial States
Athletic Conference (GSAC). He helped lead Cabrini (9-7, 6-3) to
wins over Marywood University (9-6, 4-4) and Rosemont College (8-8,
6-3). Walton-Moss led a short-handed Cavaliers' squad (only seven
players saw action) to an 86-82 win against Marywood on Wednesday
with 25 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists in 40 minutes. He shot
a perfect 15-15 from the foul line and also snagged four steals
in the contest. In Saturday's 103-70 win over Rosemont, Walton-Moss
tallied 10 points, 10 rebounds and 13 assists, matching the program's
one-game assists record for the second time in his career. He again
was perfect (4-4) from the foul line while adding another steal.
Kanner, a 6-2 senior forward from Scarsdale, N.Y., averaged 20.5
points on 58.6 percent (17-29) shooting, 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks
in a 2-0 week for No. 5-ranked (D3hoops.com) Tufts. She also became
only the 11th player in Tufts program history to reach 1,000 career
points. The Jumbos (14-1, 3-0), who play in the New England Small
College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), posted a 65-42 home victory
on Friday over then-No. 3-ranked Amherst College (14-1, 2-1). Kanner
scored a game- and season-high 24 points, shooting 10-17 from the
field, to go along with seven rebounds and two blocks. It marked
the first loss of the season and a season-low point total for Amherst,
which had won 14 straight games. Kanner followed that performance
by scoring 17 points (7-12 shooting), including her 1,000th career
point, totaling game-bests of eight boards and three blocks, and
adding two assists in a 70-46 win against Trinity (Conn.) College
(5-10, 2-2) on Saturday.
Each Tuesday, the USBWA is selecting men's and women's Division
III National Players of the Week. This is the first season that
the USBWA will recognize national players of the week from Division
III.
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in
1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers.
With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential
organizations in college basketball. It has selected an All-America
team since the 1956-57 season. For more information on the USBWA
