ST. LOUIS (USBWA) – Hakeem Harris of New York University (Manhattan, N.Y.) and Alex Moore of Rhode Island College (Providence, R.I.) were named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Division III National Players of the Week for the week ending Jan. 25.

Harris, a 6-1 junior guard from Bergenfield, N.J., averaged 24.0 points per game to lead NYU to two victories over nationally-ranked foes. Coming off the bench in both games, he shot 51.6 percent (16-21) from the field and 57.1 percent from three-point range (12-of-21). Harris scored 24 points as NYU (12-4, 3-2), a member of the University Athletic Association (UAA), took down then-No. 4 (D3hoops.com) Washington University-St. Louis (14-2, 3-2) 91-67 on Friday. Harris finished 8-16 from the floor and 6-10 from behind the arc, while also collecting three steals, two assists and a rebound. In the Violets’ 85-69 win over then-No. 21 University of Chicago (11-5, 3-2) on Sunday, Harris again scored 24 points. He went 8-15 from the floor, 6-11 from three-point range, and also picked up two assists. The two victories lifted NYU to No. 23 after being unranked prior to the week.

Moore, a 5-7 sophomore guard from West Newbury, Mass., led Rhode Island (6-11, 4-3), a member of the Little East Conference, to a 3-0 record. She averaged 24.3 points on 62.1 percent (23-37) shooting along with 6.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.3 steals per game. On Tuesday, she totaled 25 points (8-11 FG, 2-4 3FG), nine rebounds, six assists, and four steals in a 70-53 win over Western Connecticut State University (11-5, 3-4). On Thursday, Moore scored a career-high 35 points (11-20 FG, 6-10 3FG), including a half-court buzzer-beater that lifted the Anchorwomen into overtime en route to a 87-76 non-conference win against Connecticut College (13-4). She also collected two assists and four steals in her 42 minutes. Moore then closed the week on Saturday with 13 points (4-6 FG, 1-1 3FG), seven rebounds, three steals, and two blocks in a 61-59 win over Eastern Connecticut State University (11-5, 3-4).

Each Tuesday, the USBWA is selecting men's and women's Division III National Players of the Week. This is the first season that the USBWA will recognize national players of the week from Division III.

The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball. It has selected an All-America team since the 1956-57 season.
