ST. LOUIS (USBWA) Hakeem Harris of
New York University (Manhattan, N.Y.) and Alex Moore
of Rhode Island College (Providence, R.I.) were named the
U.S. Basketball Writers Association Division III
National Players of the Week for the week ending Jan.
25.
Harris, a 6-1 junior guard from Bergenfield, N.J., averaged
24.0 points per game to lead NYU to two victories over
nationally-ranked foes. Coming off the bench in both games, he
shot 51.6 percent (16-21) from the field and 57.1 percent from
three-point range (12-of-21). Harris scored 24 points as NYU
(12-4, 3-2), a member of the University Athletic Association
(UAA), took down then-No. 4 (D3hoops.com) Washington
University-St. Louis (14-2, 3-2) 91-67 on Friday. Harris
finished 8-16 from the floor and 6-10 from behind the arc, while
also collecting three steals, two assists and a rebound. In the
Violets 85-69 win over then-No. 21 University of Chicago (11-5,
3-2) on Sunday, Harris again scored 24 points. He went 8-15 from
the floor, 6-11 from three-point range, and also picked up two
assists. The two victories lifted NYU to No. 23 after being
unranked prior to the week.
Moore, a 5-7 sophomore guard from West Newbury, Mass., led
Rhode Island (6-11, 4-3), a member of the Little East
Conference, to a 3-0 record. She averaged 24.3 points on 62.1
percent (23-37) shooting along with 6.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists
and 3.3 steals per game. On Tuesday, she totaled 25 points (8-11
FG, 2-4 3FG), nine rebounds, six assists, and four steals in a
70-53 win over Western Connecticut State University (11-5, 3-4).
On Thursday, Moore scored a career-high 35 points (11-20 FG,
6-10 3FG), including a half-court buzzer-beater that lifted the
Anchorwomen into overtime en route to a 87-76 non-conference win
against Connecticut College (13-4). She also collected two
assists and four steals in her 42 minutes. Moore then closed the
week on Saturday with 13 points (4-6 FG, 1-1 3FG), seven
rebounds, three steals, and two blocks in a 61-59 win over
Eastern Connecticut State University (11-5, 3-4).
Each Tuesday, the USBWA is selecting men's and women's Division
III National Players of the Week. This is the first season that
the USBWA will recognize national players of the week from Division
III.
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in
1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers.
With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential
organizations in college basketball. It has selected an All-America
