DALLAS (NCBWA) – The National Collegiate Baseball
Writers Association released its NCAA Division II National
Players of the Week awards for the week ending on April
25, 2021. Drury sophomore catcher Nikko Calabro
is the National Hitter of the Week and
Illinois-Springfield freshman righty Chad Saner
is the National Pitcher of the Week.
Calabro (St. John's, Fla./ Bishop Kenny) went 10 for 14 at the
plate with six extra-base hits. He had a double in all four games
and posted a 1.429 slugging percentage, and a .778 on-base percentage
in Drury's series against Truman State. Calabro had multi-hit performances
in all four games and scored six runs. He started the weekend going
4 for 4 against the Bulldogs on Friday, then went a combined 4 for
6 at the plate in Saturday's doubleheader.
Saner (Springfield, Ill. / Lanphier HS) threw a no-hitter in
Sunday's 7-0 victory over Southwest Baptist. He walked four batters
and struck out nine in seven innings. He pitched to just one batter
above the minimum, and did not allow a runner to reach second base.
On the season, Sander is now 6-0 with a 1.73 ERA. Opponents are
batting just .153 off of him, and he has struck out 42 batters in
36 1/3 innings.

Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of
college baseball. Membership is open to writers, broadcasters and
publicists of the sport. Members receive a membership card, directory,
newsletter updates and official votes in the Howser Award Player
of the Year, Regional Player of the Year and NCBWA All-America voting.
The NCBWA also sponsors preseason All-America awards, publication
and writing contests.
