DALLAS (NCBWA) The National
Collegiate Baseball Writers Association released its
NCAA Division II National Players of the Week awards for the
week ending on May 9, 2021. Seton Hill graduate outfielder
Tommy Pellis is the National Hitter of
the Week and Quincy senior lefty Riley Martin
is the National Pitcher of the Week.
Pellis (Greensburg, Pa.) led the Griffins at the plate as SHU
went 6-0 on the week to close out PSAC West play. Pellis was
11-24 (.458) with 10 runs scored. He hit six homers and drove in
11. He slugged 1.208 for the week and hit two dingers in game
one at Slippery Rock. He then homered twice in an extra inning
win at Pitt-Johnstown, including the game winner in the top of
the ninth inning.
Martin (Salem, Ill. / Salem HS) struck
out 19 batters in seven innings to earn the win against No. 4
Illinois-Springfield. He broke Quincys single-game record for
strikeouts, as well as the programs all-time strikeout mark.
Martin limited the Prairie Stars, who ranked second in DII in
batting average, to .125 hitting while earning his GLVC-leading
ninth victory of the season.

Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of
college baseball. Membership is open to writers, broadcasters and
publicists of the sport. Members receive a membership card, directory,
newsletter updates and official votes in the Howser Award Player
of the Year, Regional Player of the Year and NCBWA All-America voting.
The NCBWA also sponsors preseason All-America awards, publication
and writing contests.
