NCBWA NAMES NATIONAL
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

CHICAGO (NCBWA) – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released its National Hitter and Pitcher of the Week awards for the period ending February 3rd.

Corona
Schroyer

Arizona State sophomore righthander Ryan Schroyer earned Pitcher of the Week honors, while Chad Corona of San Diego State was named Hitter of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.

Schroyer opened his 2002 season by striking out 11 Southern Utah batters on February 1. A sophomore who was 2-2 and was a honorable mention freshman All-American in 2001, Schroyer allowed only three hits in 6 2/3 shutout innings to help lead ASU to the 12-0 defeat of Southern Utah. A 2000 high school All-American at Canyon del Oro in Casa Grande, Ariz., Schroyer was a 16th round selection of the Detroit Tigers in the 2000 MLB June Amateur Draft.

A native of Carlsbad, Calif. (Rancho Santa Fe Christian H.S.), Corona helped the Aztecs post a 4-1 record at Hawaii-Hilo last week by hitting .429 with three home runs, four doubles and seven RBI. Corona hit three two-run homers in the series, including two in Saturday's 9-0 win, and scored at least one run in four of the five games. The Aztec third baseman also totaled 14 assists and four putouts from the hot corner.

Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball. Membership is open to writers, broadcasters and publicists of the sport. For more information about the NCBWA, visit the association's official Web site, www.ncbwa.com.
