Southern Miss junior outfielder Jeff Cook earned the Hitter
of the Week award, while Auburn sophomore righthander Eric Brandon
earned Pitcher of the Week honors. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates
from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each
Tuesday throughout the season.
Cook batted .722 (13-for-18) in four games last week, including
a 4-for-5 performance in a 5-1 win over No. 10 Mississippi. He had
at least three hits in each game, recording a .750 on-base percentage
and a 1.389 slugging percentage. The preseason All-Conference USA
selection had a double, a triple, three home runs and drove in nine
runs. Cook scored six times and also added seven putouts in the
outfield.
Brandon became the first pitcher in school history to hurl a
9-inning perfect game as the Tigers downed Murray State, 9-0 on
March 1. Brandon also became the first Southeastern Conference pitcher
in 35 years to toss a 9-inning perfect game. He struck out a career-high
12 batters, including the last four that he faced. Facing 27 batters,
Brandon threw just 94 pitches, including 69 for strikes.
Interestingly, Brandon accomplished the feat against the alma
mater of both his mother and father, Jim and Debbie Brandon, who
originally hail from Murray, Ky.
Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of
