CHICAGO (NBCWA) The National
Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released its
National Hitter and Pitcher of the Week awards for the period
ending April 7th.
Wake Forest sophomore third baseman Jamie D'Antona and
Southwest Missouri State senior infielder Jeremy Isenhower
share the Hitter of the Week award, while Oral Roberts sophomore
righthander Renι Recio took the Pitcher of the Week honors.
The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference
each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.
D'Antona, a sophomore from Trumbull, Conn., led the Demon Deacons
to a 3-1 week that included a pair of wins over No. 12 North Carolina.
He hit safely in each game, going 7-for-15 (.467) on the week, reaching
base 10 times in 18 plate appearances for a .556 on-base percentage.
D'Antona scored seven times, smashed four home runs and drove in
nine runs. Twice, he drove in the game-winning run, including in
the series-opener against North Carolina. D'Antona and the Demon
Deacons are currently ranked No. 5, the highest ranking in school
history.
In a four-game sweep at Northern Iowa, Isenhower batted .588
(10-for-17) and had five extra-base hits and scored eight runs.
On the week, the Osawatomie, Kan., native hit .542 (13-for-24) with
11 runs scored, five doubles, a triple, a homer and six RBI. Isenhower
also had a .958 slugging percentage, drew two walks and was hit
by a pitch four times.
Recio was dominant in an 8-0 defeat of Kansas, as he fired a
one-hit shutout at the Jayhawks in chilly conditions in Tulsa on
April 2. Recio surrendered Kansas' only hit in the third inning,
but that runner was erased when the runner tried to extend a single
into a double. Recio retired 15 consecutive betters after that,
before issuing his lone walk of the game in the eighth. Recio faced
just one batter over the minimum in the win, while striking out
a career-high 13. He fanned multiple batters in five of nine innings.
The one-hitter was the first by an Oral Roberts pitcher since 1999.
