Alabama senior first baseman Brent Boyd was named the
National Hitter of the Week, while Sacred Heart sophomore righthander
Dan Scott took the Pitcher of the Week honors. The NCBWA
Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week
and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.
In the Crimson Tide's three-game sweep over Auburn, Boyd batted
.364 (4-for-11) with three home runs and seven RBI. He hit a home
run in all three games and was responsible for the game-winning
RBI in all three wins, including a two-run, walk-off home run in
the bottom of the ninth inning in Saturday's 6-5 come-from-behind
win. Boyd hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning in the series
opener and added an eighth-inning sacrifice fly to snap a 6-6 tie
en route to an 8-6 win. In the series finale, he homered to lead
off the seventh inning as UA scored four times and extended its
lead to 6-0. He also added four runs scored, one double and compiled
a 1.273 slugging percentage against the Tigers.
In four games last week, the Fort Worth, Texas native batted
.400 (6-for-15) with six runs, one double, three home runs and eight
RBI. Since becoming UA's everyday first baseman (April 20), Boyd
has posted five home runs and 13 RBI in six games.
Scott made history on Saturday by hurling the first no-hitter
in a Northeast Conference league game in over six years when he
shut down Long Island in the nightcap of a twin-bill on Saturday.
The sophomore righthander struck out 12 the most by any Sacred
Heart pitcher this season and walked just two in the 2-0 triumph.
It marked the fifth no-hitter by a Sacred Heart pitcher and the
first since April 18, 1993. The Nanuet, N.Y. native has struck out
56 batters and walked just 16 in 63.2 innings this season.
